Advent Activities: Countdown to Christmas

These ideas for Preschoolers coincide with our Weekly Advent Ideas that all of our church is using.  You  can view those here.

Week 1:

Even little children experience stress. During these times they need to wiggle and jump and move to stretch those muscles and to get some energy out. So why not put on some of your favorite praise music and move to the music? Stretch, jump, hop and twirl. After you do this, talk with them about the different ways we praise God. For example, in 2 Samuel 6:14 David danced before God to show Him how much he loved Him.

For your infants and smallest ones who aren't yet crawling, you can give them a soothing massage right before naptime or bedtime. This is a great way to alleviate stress for them and help them relax and sleep deeply. Here is a link to tell you how to and what types are best if you have never done this before.

Week 2

Quiz your preschooler's knowledge of Christmas using a nativity. Take the nativity you have in your house and ask your preschooler to tell you about each piece. If they don't know, look up what each person or thing stood for in your Bible. Luke chapter 2 is a great passage to look at together to see what each piece represents. Make sure you use a version of the Bible that is easy for them to understand. We use the NiRV in our preschool ministry. If you don't have a nativity at home, a great one is the Fisher Price Nativity. You can view it here and purchase it from Toy R Us and also Mardel.

Week 3

When you are giving your preschooler a bath, touch their toes, nose, etc. and say: "God made _____'s toes and God loves your toes." Then go through each part: their head, mind, nose, ears, mouth, etc. The point is to be thankful for the person God made you to be and it is special to God.

Week 4

In order to live out Mark 12:31, Love your neighbor as yourself, why not bake some cookies with your preschooler and then wrap them up in pretty packaging and take them to your neighbor or a friend? Why not go a step further this year and see if they would like to join you for dinner sometime during the Christmas season?

Parent Commitment (Part of our Milestones initiative)

During the year we offer times for parents to present their little ones before the church during one of our worship services. By participating in this event they are saying to the  God and the church body that they are committing to educate their child about Jesus.  We as a church also take this time to state that we are standing alongside them to help them in this somewhat overwhelming task.

If you would like more information or would like to inquire about upcoming Parent Commitment opportunities please email Sherry Shaw the Preschool Minister sshaw@fbclewisville.org
